My work explores what it is to be a woman today through depicting myself living out my personal ‘fantasies’, from Tudors, to iconic pop culture cowboys and famous mountaineers. I want my silly, surreal self-portraits to spark joy and humour in my viewers, whilst simultaneously raising a conversation surrounding women’s roles in society, and why we inherently feel secretive about our private ‘obsessions’.
For my final master’s project I pushed myself to take on a more personal approach to self-portraiture. I did this by producing a large-scale painting based on my male family members’ climb of Mont Blanc in 1991. It’s my hope that through adding myself to the historic trip I’ve effectively given both myself and other female climbers a voice in a male dominated sport.
