MA Moving Image and Sound
As an audiovisual bio-artist, I use experimental media to study biological (particularly mycological) phenomena. Throughout my time on the MA Moving Image and Sound course at Norwich University of the Arts, I have developed a deep understanding of my practice and discovered the critical concepts and themes that propel my artwork.
During the year, I have been able to form specialised processes such as a ‘cymonification’ system that enables the study of mycorrhizal life and biological energies. Using biosonification and water cymatics in unison to sonify then visualise fungi, I have developed a multifaceted, rhizomatic approach to my audiovisual work that initiated a personal original outlook and understanding of my practice. Considering where this course may lead me, I realise that my interest in biological research as well as the desire to pursue my artistic audiovisual practice unlocks the opportunity for both scientific and artistic endeavour – now recognising that these two routes can indeed be explored in unison.
Collaborations with other practitioners such as Marian Saunders, enabled me to comprehend how the integration and collaboration of idea and practice can enlighten original, innovative thoughts. It was also through this collaboration I developed an interest in VJ practice (using VDMX software), which is something I am considering incorporating further within my work. The course provided the ideal structure to develop both my digital skills and conceptual thought. I look forward to developing further connections with individuals and communities who have presented as vital inspiration and stimulus in my project.
